Front-end education for the real world. Since 2018.

The State of CSS 2025 results are in

One thing we can’t ignore this year is there’s been a reduction in respondents vs 2024. The 2024 survey was completed by 9,704 people and this year’s only got 5,506. That’s quite a reduction!

There’s no shade there though. I think this year has been a particularly hard year for people and finding time to complete a survey like this is tricky at the best of times.

Stuff I picked up from the resultspermalink

I was quite disappointed to see the removal of the “Blogs and magazines” category in the resources section which was present in the 2024 results. These survey results get shared around a lot and it’s a good opportunity for publications like the one you’re reading right now to get some new eyes on it.

More relevant degrees

I spotted that there’s been a 3% uplift in people doing a higher education degree in a related field to the job they have in the industry. I would have guessed that number would drop because — especially in the UK — higher education is so expensive. Maybe the AI bubble will skew results over the next few years though.

Still a dude-fest

The results are also still very heavily white men in their 30’s. I refuse to believe “that’s just how the industry is” because it isn’t.

I know the team behind these surveys are trying to tip the balance but we should discuss this more as an industry as I see it, because better representation is going to give organisations like browser vendors, much more accurate data to work with.

Browser vendors use this data to make decisions on what they prioritise.

People are making more money

People have had pay rises. The yearly incoming average has increased from $74,853 to $79,433. This makes me happy for everyone. Let’s hope that number doesn’t drop next year.

Wrapping uppermalink

I’m not going to touch on CSS features — I’ll let you all enjoy those results yourselves — but I will say, I like seeing some really healthy usage of the new stuff. Especially :has()!

I think the time is now to both increase respondents and the gender and ethnicity representation in these surveys. I don’t know how, but we’re a smart bunch in this industry. Let’s put our networks to good use to work out a way together. I’m certainly here to help.
