I published this article last week and I thought it would be a good idea to surface it for Piccalilli readers because the plans outlined in there affect this platform.
I always wanted the studio to do net good and give back as much — if not more — than it takes. The thing is, running a studio that supports staff is hard, so naturally, you take on projects that you might not fully be behind. We’ve done great work — and continue to do so — but collectively, we’re all a bit burned out with Marketing™ oriented and KPI-chasing work.
In short, we’re trying to make the following work:
- We share as much as we possibly can of the work we do at Set Studio and how we do it, resulting in us providing free — at the point of entry — real-world education material.
- We focus our work on campaigns, movements and other efforts that bring tangible, progressive change to society.
To make that happen, we’re going to explore opening up a supports/sponsorship system — likely with OpenCollective or Github sponsors. This will unlock a new type of content on Piccalilli — Projects — where we research, design and build projects in the open, sharing key details behind the work and providing you with proper real world education. It’s our strap line at the end of the day!

There’s an unbelievable amount of work that needs to go into this even happening in the first place and I’m really keen for it to happen. If this sounds cool, you can sign up to get updates in the form up there ☝️
This whole setup will be so unique — an agency working completely in the open. I hope it’ll demonstrate that there are agencies that truly care about users — not just their profit margins, too.
