My setup and what I use

Here’s all the stuff I use day-to-day to do what I do and how I have it set up.

Computer and desk stuff permalink

I have a 2019 16” MacBook Pro with an 8 core i9 processor, 1TB SSD drive and 32GB of RAM. It’s by far the best Mac I’ve ever had and I’ve been a Mac user since the original weird coloured iMacs!

I’ve got an LG 27UD88-W, 4K, 27” USB-C screen that does the job nicely. All I do is plug the ol’ MacBook in. I prefer Apple Cinema Displays but they’re long gone now.

I’ve got a 3rd generation iPad Air that I use for music and sketching on Procreate. For inputs, I’ve got a Space Grey Magic Keyboard, a Magic Trackpad and an MX Ergo trackball. I also have a RØDE Podcaster for recording my voice and a BRIO 4k webcam for recording my face. All of this sits on top of an Autonomous SmartDesk 2.

For music (and noise cancellation), I’ve treated myself to a pair of AirPods Max which are fantastic.

I’ve got a Beurer TL 30 SAD lamp that helps in the dark winter months and more Field Notes than you can shake a stick at. I use them, along with Notion, which is the beating heart for everything else. I plan content, run projects and most client work through there.

It’s actually this tidy all the time because I am one of those annoyingly tidy people.

Design, code and writing setup permalink

I use VS Code with Vim for coding and iTerm2 as my terminal. For my editor and terminal font, I use Operator Mono. I use a theme called Soot Theme that I made, for my theme.

I use IA Writer for writing nearly all content. It’s a super good, focused writing tool.

I prefer to use Sketch for static UI design and look and feel, but prefer to work in HTML and CSS for proper design work. I still very occasionally fire up Adobe Creative suite because the Illustrator pen tool can’t be beaten.

This website is a powered by Next JS, HTML, CSS (Sass with Gorko) and vanilla client-side JavaScript. You can read more about it here.

For those into typography, I’m using Notulen Serif Display for headings and Atkinson Hyperlegible as the body font (accessibility for the win). I’m using a system mono stack.
